The BBG committee consists of members who meet once a month to discuss the strategy and future of the BBG. Together, they bring their individual expertise in planning, financing, legal, organising and communications to develop the association. Their aim is to make it as relevant, informative and enjoyable as it can be, in developing business for companies and individuals in Azerbaijan.
Chairman – JOHN PATTERSON, OBE
John Patterson OBE has lived in Azerbaijan for 23 years. He has been on the BBG Committee since the year 2000 and has been Chairman of the BBG for over 13 years now.
He received an OBE for Services to British Commercial Interests in Azerbaijan in the 2015 New Year Honours List. His company, i2offshore Ltd is a Personal Financial Advisory Company, however it does get involved occasionally in inward investment projects.
Legal Compliance Secretary – ISMAIL ASKEROV
Ismail Askerov is an active member of the International Bar Association. He is admitted to the Collegiuem of Advocates of the Azerbaijani Republic and entitled to represent his clients before the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan. Since 2004 he has been an active member of the Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation. Ismail is the Managing Partner of MGB Law Offices with over 23 years of experience in corporate, project finance, telecom and aircraft finance. Ismail is Leading Lawyer and highly recommended by Legal 500, IFLR and Chambers Global.
Education & CSR – TURGAY TEYMUROV
Turgay Teymurov is Assurance Partner of EY Azerbaijan. Turgay graduated from the Azerbaijan State Economics University and joined EY in December 2000. Turgay has experience in serving various multinational and local clients including Global Financial Services and Oil & Gas sectors in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia. Turgay successfully completed Harvard Leadership Program in 2014. He is also a course instructor on a number of EY local and international training programs. Turgay is a Talent Leader of EY Azerbaijan and is a member of EY CIS People Board.
Turgay is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ACA) and is a member of the the American Institute of CPAs. He is licensed Auditor of the Azerbaijan Republic and the US Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Yunis Salayev is a Partner of BDO in Azerbaijan. He is a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant (FCCA, UK) with more than 18 years of professional background in Azerbaijan, Russia and other CIS countries. He is running BDO member firm in Azerbaijan, developing and implementing company strategies, managing client relationship, service delivery, human resources, business processes and risks.
Yunis is Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE, US), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA, US), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA, US) and a Member of Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (MCSI, UK). I hold an MBA degree with Merit from Imperial College London Business School. Yunis is a licensed statutory auditor in Azerbaijan.
Elkhan Aliyev is a Senior Audit Manager at Deloitte Azerbaijan. Elkhan has more than 10 years of work experience, with the last 9 years gained at Deloitte. Apart from working in Baku, he spent two years at Deloitte in London, working on high profile engagements. He holds a master’s degree from State University of Economics and is a member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Elkhan has been a member of the BBG committee since 2017.
Summer Xia is the Country Director of the British Council in Azerbaijan and the Cultural Attaché at the British Embassy in Baku. He started his career at the British Council in 2004 when he joined the Education Marketing team in China. Since then he has worked in a variety of roles in the British Council global network including its headquarters in London. He has been Director of Operations in Indonesia and Deputy Director in Thailand. Before taking up his role in Azerbaijan in 2018, he was based in Singapore as the Regional Change Director for East Asia, implementing global change programmes across 14 markets in the region.
Summer is a strong believer in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). He has led the mainstreaming of EDI within the British Council, aiming to create a more inclusive organisation culture.
Summer has a degree in Information and Computing Science and a diploma in Professional Marketing. He is also certified by the Association for Project Management (APM) in Project Management and by the Charter ed Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in Learning and Development.
Summer is passionate about the important role cultural relations play in the modern world and looks forward to building on the work British Council has delivered over the last 27 years in Azerbaijan and contributing to the strengthening of the Azerbaijan-UK relationship.
In his spare time, Summer enjoys travelling, hiking, diving, and sports. He looks forward to exploring Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan during his posting here.
Francis is the Country Director of the British Council Azerbaijan and the Cultural Attaché at the British Embassy in Baku. Francis joined the British Council in 2015, and has worked in a number of the organisation’s priority operations. He has been Assistant Director Nigeria and managed programmes in India, spanning a range of Cultural Relations disciplines. Before moving to Azerbaijan, Francis has been based at the British Council’s London headquarters, managing government relations, bilateral strategy and risk for MENA, Europe and Wider Europe.
British Embassy Representative – Joel Derbyshire
Joel is the Director of Trade and Investment at the British Embassy, Baku. His team help British companies win business in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani organisations invest in the UK. Joel is also Department for International Trade’s energy lead for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He was previously Director of Trade and Investment at the British Embassy, Jakarta.
Commitee Member – Helen Pearson
Helen has been living in Baku since 2019 and is currently the Community Liaison Officer at the British Embassy in Azerbaijan. Prior to coming to Baku she had supported research funding applications across a wealth of disciplines to UK government and charity funders, as well as co-ordinated international projects to narrow the gender gap in business and encourage diversity in STEM.

Mr James Sharp has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan in succession to Dr Carole Crofts who has retired from the Diplomatic Service. Mr Sharp has taken up his appointment during July 2019.
