The committee

The BBG committee consists of members who meet once a month to discuss the strategy and future of the BBG. Together, they bring their individual expertise in planning, financing, legal, organising and communications to develop the association. Their aim is to make it as relevant, informative and enjoyable as it can be, in developing business for companies and individuals in Azerbaijan.



John Patterson





John Patterson OBE has lived in Azerbaijan for 19 years.  He has been on the BBG Committee since the year 2000 and has been Chairman of the BBG for over 10 years now.

He received an OBE for Services to British Commercial Interests in Azerbaijan in the 2015 New Year Honours List. His company, i2offshore Ltd is a Personal Financial Advisory Company, however it does get involved occasionally in inward investment projects.

Morgan Phillips






Morgan was originally from Epsom but moved to Cornwall after joining the Royal Navy as an engineer. Working for a large international engineering company and via Lebanon and the UAE, he came to Baku in 1998. Morgan now runs a local engineering company and provides engineering consultancy for a number of organisations in Azerbaijan.



Legal Compliance Secretary







Ismail Askerov is an active member of the International Bar Association. He is admitted to the Collegiuem of Advocates of the Azerbaijani Republic and entitled to represent his clients before the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan. Since 2004 he has been an active member of the Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation.



Honorary Secretary


Alum Bati





Alum is a barrister-at-law from London and represents Wicklow Corporate Services Ltd through which he provides legal and tax advice in Azerbaijan. He arrived in 1993 and is the only non-Azerbaijani citizen to have been appointed to a Parliamentary commission and to have addressed the law commission in Azerbaijan. Alum has been honorary legal adviser to the British Ambassador, advisory board member of the Eurasia Foundation in Azerbaijan, and a regular speaker at OECD conferences on corporate governance.




American Chamber of Commerce Liaison


Emil Garayev is a Director in Tax & Legal Department of Deloitte.  He joined Deloitte in 2006. Emil has an experience of eleven years in advising local and multinational companies on direct, indirect and individual tax issues.  He is specialized in providing tax assistance to clients in financial services industry.

He has been on a half year secondment in International Tax team of Deloitte based in London. He holds a bachelor and master degrees in Law.




British Chamber of Commerce Liaison


Howard Lyn is a founder and head of Rapid Solutions Group, the multidiscipline international engineering company specialising in electrical, automation, fluid power, telecom solutions.

Before coming to Azerbaijan, Howard worked as a Project / Contract Manager with a UK leading Electrical, Instrumentation and Telecommunications Contractor. In 1994 he came to Baku on a short contract with Morrisons Construction and then with Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC) before he identified the demand for quality electrical and telecoms services in the country and in 1996 he started Rapid Electrical Solutions Azerbaijan, later to be known as Rapid Solutions Ltd.  As the company continued successfully growing it added more disciplines to its portfolio.  The company cooperates with local universities and in 2016 opened The Compex Training Centre in Baku.  Howard has been an active member of BBG from its beginning and in 2016 he received the Robin Bennett award for his contributions to British – Azerbaijani relations. Howard has a vast knowledge of doing business in Azerbaijan; he understands and values the country’s culture and people.

Public Affairs 





Sona Taghiyeva is a Counsel in Dentons’ Baku office, a global law firm. She has been working in the Washington DC, New York and Prague offices of Dentons.

Sona has been independently recommended as a Rising Star in Azerbaijan by the IFLR Energy and Infrastructure Guide in 2014-2017. She has also been awarded as a “Rising Star” in “Financial and Corporate” by the IFLR1000 – The Guide to the World’s Leading Financial Law Firms in 2015-2017.

Sona was admitted to the New York Bar in January 2011.  She is also a member of American Bar Association since January 2011. Sona has been teaching courses on “Corporations” at the LLM Commercial Law Faculty and “General Energy Law” at the LLM Energy and Maritime Law Faculty of Baku State University since September 2013.

Sona graduated from Baku State University (Dipl. of International Law); Baku State University (LLM International Law) and the University of San Diego, USA (LLM).

Turgay Teymurov is Assurance Partner of EY Azerbaijan. Turgay graduated from the Azerbaijan State Economics University and joined EY in December 2000. Turgay has experience in serving various multinational and local clients including Global Financial Services and Oil & Gas sectors in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia. Turgay successfully completed Harvard Leadership Program in 2014. He is also a course instructor on a number of EY local and international training programs. Turgay is a Talent Leader of EY Azerbaijan and is a member of EY CIS People Board.

Turgay is an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ACA) and is a member of the the American Institute of CPAs. He is licensed Auditor of the Azerbaijan Republic and the US Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Chuck is an accountant with over 50 years of experience. Retired now, Chuck has taught accounting and auditing at the college level and for firms. He has worked in Public Accounting as a Certified Public Accountant (USA, Ohio and Washington, retired status), a Controller at a Division of a Fortune 500 company. For over 20 years, Chuck has contributed his knowledge, skills and abilities as an Accounting Advisor on Projects for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – Ukraine and Azerbaijan and International Finance Corporation (World Bank) Azerbaijan Corporate Governance Project. Chuck has three children and five grandchildren in the United States and is excellently looked after by an Azerbaijani family of three.
